Driving around Joburg in a heavy summer storm can be pretty hazardous, even in a large SUV. So when I was handed the keys of the teeny Citröen C1 on Tuesday and the lightning split the sky 20 minutes later, I paled. In fact the flood of rain got so heavy, that my hand reached out for Uber on speed dial. But little should I have worried because my mini (and yes she has a bit of an echo of one ) steed came through Noah’s tea party, shining. I know it’s weird to talk about a car’s wind screen wipers but bear with me. A single blade sweeps across the front widescreen with such precision and effectiveness, that I found myself simply driving aimlessly in the rain , and stopping in side streets to watch this poetry in motion. But that’s not all she’s got. First debuted in March 2014 at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show , C1 landed in the latter part of last year on local shores and immediately made a mark here because of her cute, stunning looks and respectable price and performance.
There’s a lot of improvement from her predecessor in the aesthetic department – she’s far more funky and colour coded and you know how important colour is for us girls.
There are eight body colours to confuse yourself with, including black, grey, brown white, blue and red and I have to say for me it’s a toss up between the black and red. Her wheels are super sexy too, coming in 14-inch or 15-inch wheel covers and 15-inch alloys.
The colour theme goes further with funky interiors like door panel colored inserts, giving the C1 a totally unique character – perfect for a modern urban fashionista. I have to say, although I really loved the wipers, the reverse park camera came in a very close second. HI teched and specced, the French just know how to make a girl happy.
By the way, if you want to actually know how the car will DRIVE, there’s a choice of two petrol engines including a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol VTi 82 unit with 61 kW/118 Nm and a claimed fuel consumption of 4.3-litres/100km and 99g/km CO2 emissions.
In a highly competitive entry level class, at logger heads with the Kia Picanto and Peugeot 107, I think the C1’s wipers decide it for me.
If you thought I had fallen off the edge of the world, you are not that wrong. It’s been about a year since I have visited this site – it wasn’t that I didn’t want to,or didn’t try. I basically developed Bloggers Block . Now it wasn’t your old usual kind of motoring journo block, when you look at a Tata or a Chev spark and you just feel that uninspired kind of block. Mine had a bit more high voltage drama.
Some of you probably know this… So if it’s boring switch your ignition off…but for those of you who don’t – I had a rather awful (and expensive) car accident in September 2013 . Because it was an Italian super car it attracted quite a lot of attention in the Sunday papers and on Twitter. But it was after Gareth Cliff slagged me off to the nation on his breakfast show that I kind of crawled into a ball and died. The hype did inspire a whole lot of traffic to the site but at the time I was too shaken to care.
Plus it wasn’t cool kind of attention : I pretty much felt like I had done the worst thing any person on the planet could do …. Smash up a beautiful shiny mega million buck metal goddess. And of course the women driver jokes that followed me for a long time didn’t help. My site soon became a bit like a circus of people whose curiosity was pretty well drenched up in cruelty. Social media does that. It gives even the most limp minded individuals courage to be cunts. So I stayed away. For far too long. I have always said : don’t let the bustards get you down. I should have taken my own advice. But recently I got a little braver and like all good self respecting girl petrol heads, I went and got myself a tattoo.
IT SAYS :
WHAT WE CALL THE BEGINNING IS OFTEN THE END
THE END IS WHERE WE START FROM
( inspired by TS ELIOT – who is not a petrol head. )
So I guess this means Girl Torque is back on track.
